Fans of Croatian football had every reason to celebrate last night after the more than satisfying win against Ukraine in the final World Cup qualifier of Group I on October 9, 2017.

After an unforgivable draw at Rujevica last week to Finland and the sacking of ex-Croatian coach Ante Čačić, it was becoming evident that perhaps the fall of Croatian football was upon us. That was until Croatia’s final World Cup qualifier against Ukraine last night in Kiev.

Zlatko Dalić, the man to step in as Croatia’s savior with just 48-hours to prepare for one of the biggest games the organization has seen, achieved what discouraged fans of Croatian football thought was impossible. A 2:0 win in Kiev last night now refreshes Croatia’s hope of the World Cup next year in Russia, forcing the team into an exciting playoff round for the competition that will be held in the beginning of November.

While we can all be excited about two more national team matches on the horizon, Croatia’s opponents in the playoff draw could be Ireland, Northern Ireland, Sweden, or Greece. We’ll find out for sure this Friday afternoon.

Croatian football fans are slowly picking up the pieces to their broken hopes of the national team, and if we continue on the path to victory with motivated players and a coach who at least knows half of what he is talking about, a trip to Russia next summer is imminent.

The feeling of last night is best summed up with the celebration of two Croatia captains.

We are all probably aware by now that former Croatia captain Darijo Srna visited the national team in Kiev to lift the spirits of the players before the game of their career. It was also not surprising to see Srna in the VIP lodge of Olympic Stadium last night cheering on his former teammates with his wife in tow.

The moment that was more than deserving of an “aww” came after Croatia sealed the victory against Ukraine.

After celebrating on the pitch with his teammates by his side, current Croatia captain Luka Modrić was quick to look to the stands and lock eyes with former captain Darijo Srna. The two footballers pumped their arms to the sky in unison, with glee, adorning smiles that stretched across their faces.

From one captain to another, here’s hoping we can share more moments like this.
