Istra 1961 easily defeated Lokomotiva in the quarter-finals of the SuperSport Croatian Cup on Tuesday, securing a 3-0 victory to become the third team to advance to the semi-finals.
In their second encounter in just a few days — after they defeated Lokomotiva 3-2 in the 24th round of the league last Friday — the home side once again was victorious at Aldo Drosina stadium.
The hosts took the lead as early as the second minute through Lawal, while Antonio Maurić doubled the advantage ten minutes later. The game was wrapped up in first-half stoppage time when Mateo Lisica scored for 3-0, which remained the final score.
Right at the start of the match, Maurić delivered a brilliant through ball to Lawal, who timed his run into the penalty area perfectly. In a one-on-one situation, he calmly slotted past Lokomotiva’s goalkeeper Luka Savatović.
Istra’s second goal came in the 12th minute from a set-piece. Josip Radošević delivered a cross from the left towards the edge of the box, where the unmarked Maurić rose highest and headed the ball into the net.
Lokomotiva came closest to scoring in the 43rd minute. Fran Karačić sent in a cross from the right, Luka Dajčer leapt the highest, but his close-range header was superbly saved by Lovro Majkić.
Just as referee Patrik Kolarić was preparing to blow the whistle for half-time, Istra managed to score a third goal. The move started down the left wing where Kristijan Fućak crossed towards the near post. The Lokomotiva defense attempted to clear it with a header, but the ball ended up on the opposite side of the goal, around the box. Mateo Lisica was waiting and powered a strong shot under the crossbar.
In the second half, Istra expertly defended their lead while threatening on the counter. Lokomotiva had two good chances to score, but in the 55th minute, Marko Pajač struck the post, and shortly after, Majkić saved a close-range effort from Komnen Andrić, who failed to make solid contact with the ball.
Rijeka and Osijek had already secured their places in the semi-finals. Rijeka triumphed 3-1 over Hajduk in the Adriatic Derby at Poljud, while Osijek knocked out defending champions Dinamo with a 1-0 victory at Maksimir.
The last quarter-final match is set for today in Koprivnica, where Slaven Belupo and Gorica will face off at 5 PM.
