Ivo Karlović, Mirjana Lučić – Baroni, and Ana Konjuh went trough to the second round, Borna Ćorić and Ivan Dodig out

Ivo Karlović was on the court at Flushing Meadows on August 30, 2016, and set the new US Open record in number of aces per match. He blasted 61 aces and beat Yen-Hsun Lu 4-6, 7-6, 6-7, 7-6, 7-5 after just under four hours of play.

The previous record was held by Richard Krajicek who had 49 aces in 1999’s US Open match vs. Yevgeniy Kafelnikov. In the second round of the tournament, Doctor Ivo will play home player Donald Young.

Two Croatian players in the women’s tournament have reached the second round. Mirjana Lučić – Baroni beat Alize Cornet from France 6-4, 6-1, but in today’s second round will face the second-seeded Angelique Kerber. Ana Konjuh defeated Dutch player Kiki Bertens 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, and will face Japanese Kurumi Nara in the second round.

In the male tournament, Marin Čilić won the first round earlier, while Borna Ćorić was forced to retire his match versus Feliciano Lopez early in the first set due to a knee injury. Bad news for Croatian Davis Cup team, as the semi-final match vs. France is so close.

Ivan Dodig lost to Ukraine’s Illya Marchenko 3-6, 4-6, 7-6, 5-7, but he is expected to do more in the doubles tournament where he is second-seeded with his partner Marcelo Mello.
