July 17, 2024 – Luka Modrić will wear his beloved Real Madrid jersey again next season and captain the team as he approaches 39 years old.

While it has been written about for some time, the news we have all been waiting for has officially been confirmed. Luka Modrić, who has worn the colors of the Royal club since 2012, will stay at the Santiago Bernabeu in the 2024/25 season.

Last year, Modrić proved he could still contribute to his team and persuaded the leaders to extend his contract, even though he will celebrate his 39th birthday in September. Instead of retiring, Modrić will lead Real Madrid to defend their Champions League and La Liga titles. This also means he will have the opportunity to overtake Ferenc Puskas and become the oldest player to ever play for Real Madrid.

Modrić can also become the most celebrated footballer in Real Madrid’s history. He currently shares that position with Nacho, who is no longer with the club and cannot increase his 26 trophy count. With this new contract, Modrić gets that chance.

The 2018 Ballon d’Or winner has played 534 games for Madrid, scoring 39 goals with 86 assists. Among his more prominent trophies are six Champions League titles (a record he shares with Dani Carvajal) and four La Liga titles.
