Marin Čilić has made it to the quarterfinal of the Madrid Open!
On Thursday, Croatia’s best tennis player Marin Čilić advanced to the quarterfinal of the Masters Series tournament in Madrid after defeating Serbian tennis player Laslo Đere after two hours and ten minutes of play. Čilić won 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, reports Gol.hr on May 9, 2019.
Čilić lost the first set after Đere took his service to lead 5-4. In the second set, though he lost his first service, Čilić played more secure and took advantage of the first chance to break to equalize at 3-3, after which he won three more games in a row for 6-3.
In the third set, Čilić played better, took Đere’s service for 2-1 and then for 4-1. After that, Čilić took the match in his hands.
Čilić served 12 aces in the match while and Đere hit three. Čilić was better on his first service (82 percent to 60 percent) and saved eight of ten breaks, and took the service of his rival four times.
This was the first match between Čilić and Đere, who is 32nd on the ATP ranking. In the quarterfinal, Čilić will play Novak Djokovic who beat Jeremy Chardy in the round of 16. In 19 mutual appearances against Djokovic, Čilić has won only twice.
In other Madrid Open news, Petra Martić failed to defeat the eighth best tennis player in the world, American Sloane Stephens. Stephens celebrated in the quarterfinal match in two sets – 6:4, 6:3.
Mate Pavić and doubles partner Oliver Marach also failed to win their quarterfinal match, losing to Diego Schwartzman and Dominic Thiem.
