Marin Čilić Through to US Open Quarter-finals!

Marin’s incredible winning streak in New York continues

Fantastic news from Flushing meadows today (maybe it will bring a smile on your face after a bitter pill served by the football team).

Marin Čilić, defending champion, reached to quarter-finals of US Open today with a 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (7/2) 6-1 win over France`s Jeremy Chardy.

Čilić, ninth seed, now has a new personal record in New York with 11 successive wins in this tournament after he captured his first ever Grand Slam title in this city last year. But, it wasn’t easy, he had to overcome quite an injury scare in the second set when he twisted his right ankle.

“I tried not to let it affect my movement too much. In the first few games of the third set I was aware of it, but it passed after that”, he said.

Of course, being a true Croat, he couldn’t go through the game without a nail-biter or two, in this case a third set tie-break. But with four aces (out of the total 23 served during the match), he swept through the tie-break.

“I took a page from Goran Ivanišević’s book in the tie break,” he said, explaining his inspiration from coach and big-hitting former Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanišević who was renowned for digging his way out of tie-breaks with unstoppable serve.

In the quarter-finals, Čilić will face yet another French player, ether 19th seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or Benoit Paire, one of the biggest surprises of this year’s US Open.
