Never a dull moment in the wonderful world of Croatian football.
It comes as no surprise that things have been heating up in the world of Croatian football as of late.
While Davor Šuker’s mandate as HNS president is nearly up, new elections will be held on December 22, 2017, to crown a new head of Croatian football, forcing Šuker and his opposition to gather enough support for the candidacy. It has been a wild ride thus far.
Just one day after the Zagreb Football Federation announced their support of the Croatian Football Federation under Šuker’s leadership, expressing a desire to continue their fruitful cooperation with the top dog and proposed him for a new term of office; things looked much different for the HNS leader down in Dalmatia.
Split mayor Andro Krstulović Opara declined a meeting in Zagreb proposed by the Executive Committee of the Croatian Football Federation on the topic of constructing football fields.
Here’s what the Split mayor told the head of the HNS, as reported by Slobodna Dalmacija on November 29, 2017.
Dear Mr. Šuker,
I received your letter, and hereby confirm that neither I nor any other representative of the City of Split will attend the proposed meeting. The reason for our refusal is more than obvious since you have not shown any interest in the state of football infrastructure in the City of Split for the past five years.
Moreover, given the fact that the candidature is in progress for the election of the president of HNS, I find it rude, unbusinesslike and illegitimate to call such conversations ten days before the election. This overwhelming topic needs to be accessed systematically, with the necessary elaborates and financial plans that you have not done.
I believe that after the end of the election process for the president of HNS, the new president and the leadership of the federation will have the legitimacy for these conversations and the promises associated with the topic.
Furthermore, given that the City of Split is the majority owner of HNK Hajduk š.d.d and the sole owner of Poljud Stadium, as mayor of the City of Split and representative of the club owner, I hereby confirm that I will give instructions to the members of the Supervisory Board of the club not to attend the proposed meeting since they have nothing to do.

Davor Šuker took over the Croatian Football Federation in July 2012. Two years later, the confidence in his four-year term was vindicated. HNS’s main man is hoping to continue leading the federation after these upcoming elections in December.
