Petra Martić has won her first WTA title!

The dream week for Petra Martić has a happy ending! In the final of the WTA tournament in Istanbul, also known as the Istanbul Cup, Petra Martić defeated 19-year-old Czech player Markéta Vondroušová, the 46th best tennis player in the world, 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 to get her first WTA title, reports 24 Sata on April 28, 2019.

Petra opened the first set poorly – and in it, we saw five breaks, four of them by Vondroušová. Martić had too many mistakes and forced a forehand that didn’t bring too much to her at the start of the game. In the end, Vondroušová peacefully won the first set 6-1.

But we were lucky to experience the magic of tennis in the second set. Although she was unrecognizable in the first set, at the beginning of the second set, Petra immediately took the service of her opponent and proved to come back stronger than ever. Vondroušová quickly returned, but Petra had another break, served with ease and won the second set.

An even more dramatic third set occurred. On the wings of her brilliant play, Petra overcame Vondroušová, who failed to return the bombs Petra was serving from her side of the court. With three breaks, Petra made up for the lost first set and with a score of 6-1 in the third set reached her first career title!

This was Petra’s third WTA final. Before Istanbul, Petra lost in the final of Kuala Lumpur in 2012, and last year in Bucharest. Before Sunday, Martić and Vondroušová faced one another on three occasions – the last time in the second round of this year’s Australian Open. In all four duels to date, Martić celebrated.

Petra’s brilliant tennis began at the beginning of April where she was stopped against Wozniacki in the semi-final of Charleston.

The WTA Istanbul tournament is played on clay courts and has a prize pool of $250,000.
