Qualifying Groups for 2020 Handball Euros Announced: Croatia and Serbia Meet Again

The qualifying groups for the European Handball Championships in 2020 have been decided. 

The Croatia men’s handball team has found out its opponents in the 2020 European Championship qualifiers, which will be held in Norway, Sweden and Austria. Croatia was drawn into qualifying group 2 with Serbia, Switzerland and Belgium with games to be played in Trondheim, Norway. The two first-place teams from each group and the four best third will qualify for the final tournament, reports Gol.hr on April 12, 2018.

“The Euro 2020 qualification group is certainly not easy, and we need a serious approach and engagement to confirm our departure to the next major continental competition. Opponents like Serbia, Switzerland and Belgium also want their teams to go to the Euros, and they have the right to hope for a positive outcome in the qualification. The fact that this will be a championship with 24 teams, as the base of high quality and competitive teams has expanded, confirms that the European Championship is still the best handball competition,” said Lino Červar, coach of the Croatia national team.

The European Handball Championship in 2020 will be held in Norway, Sweden and Austria and it is the first Euro that will see 24 teams compete. The host cities are Trondheim (NOR), Malmö, Gothenburg, Stockholm (SWE), Vienna and Graz (AUT).

If Croatia qualifies for the European Championship, they will play in Group C with Graz as the host city. In the event Croatia advances from the group stage, their competition continues in Vienna, while the final weekend will be held in Stockholm, Sweden’s capital.

The schedule of qualifying matches is as follows:

Group 2

Round 1, 24/25/10/2018: Croatia – Switzerland

Round 2, 27/28/10/2018: Belgium – Croatia

Round 3, 10/11/04/2019: Serbia – Croatia

Round 4, 13/14/4/2019: Croatia – Serbia

Round 5, 12/13/6/2019: Switzerland – Croatia

Round 6, 15/16/06/2019: Croatia – Belgium
