As Morski writes, at the end of this month, the much loved Istrian city of Rovinj will become a meeting place for many fans of running and other types of outdoor sporting activities.
With the support of the City of Rovinj and the local Tourist Board, the Sports Association is organising the traditional Rovinj Popolana race 2022, which will be held on Sunday, April the 24th, 2022, under the motto “Sport from streets and squares to nature and tourism.”
As has been the case with the Popolana race in previous years, the Rovinj Popolana race 2022 has a humanitarian character. All of the proceeds from the sale of T-shirts will be allocated for the needs of the Martin Horvat Children’s Department of the Special Hospital for Orthopedics and Rehabilitation, as well as for the needs of its Centre for Early Intervention for Children with Developmental Disabilities.
The sporting part envisages recreational running for five kilomeres, then relay running for 2 × 9 kilometres and cycling for 40 kilometres. As has been announced, the spectacular 16th Rovinj Half Marathon will be held, which will take runners through the city centre, along the west coast and along the 21-kilometre route of the former Rovinj-Kanfanar (Strika Ferata) railway.
The first Popolana was held back in 2007 at the initiative of the Sports Federation with the support of the City, the local Tourist Board and the well known hotel company Maistra. The goal, as stated in the motto of the event, is to promote sport, recreation, movement and physical activity in a healthy and natural environment offered by Rovinj, as well as the spirit of volunteerism.
In parallel with running, sport and other recreational events, the event has developed into a large humanitarian action called “1 + 1 = millions of steps”, raising funds for those who need it the most.
