American skier Mikaela Shiffrin is the winner of the Snow Queen Trophy on Sljeme in Zagreb!

23-year-old American skier Mikaela Shiffrin has won the World Cup slalom at Zagreb’s Sljeme for the fourth time in her career, reports Gol.hr on January 5, 2019.

The American has thus reached her seventh consecutive slalom win on the heels of this season, the 37th slalom win of her career, and the 52nd overall win in the World Cup. Shiffrin finished 1.25 seconds ahead of Slovakian skier Petra Vlhova in second, while Swiss skier Wendy Holdener took third place.

The American has thus won her fourth “Snow Queen” title, after celebrating on Sljeme in 2013, 2015 and 2018. Shiffrin now ties Austrian skier Marlies Schild who also has four wins on Sljeme.

Schild won for the first time in 2006 and celebrated again a year later. Her third victory was won in 2011 before she won at Sljeme for the last time in 2012.

With today’s victory, Shiffrin has increased her lead in the overall World Cup. Shiffrin now leads with 1214 points, followed by Vlhova in second with 748 points, while Holdener is in third with 514 points.

The same order follows in the slalom. The American skier convincingly leads with 680 points, followed by Vlhova in second with 580 points, and Holdener in third with 375 points.

The female skiers now await the slalom in Flachau on January 8th.

Croatian skier Andrea Komšić failed to qualify in the second slalom race on Sljeme, as her time was 6.17 seconds behind Shiffrin. Komšić thus took 51st place in the first run. Eleven of the female skiers were unable to finish the race on Sljeme’s Red Slope.

Around 5,500 spectators followed the first run on Sljeme. The male skiers will continue with the tournament tomorrow.
