June the 10th, 2024 – Prime Minister Andrej Plenković paid a visit to beautiful central Dalmatia, where he praised and recognised the efforts of the WTA Makarska Open organisers.

It boasts nothing less then excellent organisation, a fantastic atmosphere, a truly unique Dalmatian ambience and amazing tennis. They are just some of the reasons why the WTA Makarska Open hosted by Valamar is one of the most attractive tournaments in the world of tennis. Prime Minister Andrej Plenković also visited it recently.

“I’m glad that we’re at the Makarska WTA Open, which has been held for several years in this city, after having moved from Bol on the island of Brač. It’s nice to have the highest quality of international women’s tennis here. I’d like to congratulate Mr. Lukas and all the organisers, Mayor Paunović, County Commissioner Boban, everyone who supports this tournament and of course the Minister of Tourism, Tonči Glavina, because the government has been behind the tournament for many years.

This is a great opportunity for Croatian female tennis players, I’m glad that Petra Martić was in the quarterfinals at the WTA Makarska Open, and we wish her every success. The last time a Croat won this WTA tournament was back in 1998. Back then, the winner was Mirjana Lučić, and Croatian Iva Majoli was the last finalist, it’s been twenty years since then. We’re here to cheer for Petra and for her great success, the promotion of Croatian tennis and Croatian sport, tourism and for Makarska”, said the Prime Minister. He then watched part of the match of the only remaining Croatian representative at the tournament, Petra Martić, who fought on the court against the Australian tennis player, Maya Joint.

Along with the Prime Minister, new Minister of Tourism and Sport Tonči Glavina, Split-Dalmatia County Prefect Blaženko Boban, Member of Parliament Ante Sanader and Makarska Mayor Zoran Paunović all cheered for Petra.

WTA Makarska Open director Feliks Lukas has been behind one of the biggest events in Croatian sport for eight years now, which has been being held in Makarska for the last three years. This year, Lukas successfully brought as many as seven Croatian women to the tournament, thus breaking his own already enviable record.
