August the 9th, 2026 – Will the new toll collection system set to come into force next year actually manage to reduce the infamous Croatian traffic jams on the motorways?
As Poslovni reports, the much anticipated installation of more than 220 portals on motorways across Croatia is currently underway. Appearing on HTV’s programme Studio 4, the director of the Traffic Sector at HAC (Croatian Motorways), Hrvoje Ordulj, touched on the new toll collection system, which is expected to become operational during 2027.
More than 220 portals are currently being installed on motorways throughout Croatia, and a large part of the infrastructure has already been put in place, reports HRT. “We expect all the portals to be installed by October, and the system could go live during next year,” he said. However, he did warn that not even the new system will be able to completely eliminate the country’s well known summer congestion. “Regardless of barriers or the new toll collection system, traffic will stand still if the load is too high,” Ordulj stated.
Major projects: Učka, Novi Vinodolski and Matulji
Speaking about future projects, Ordulj announced the continuation of construction of the Novi Vinodolski bypass, the completion of the Matulji junction, and the connection of Istria and Kvarner with a full-profile motorway.
“We expect that in the first quarter of next year Istria and Kvarner will be connected by a full-profile motorway,” Ordulj said. He added that works on the sections between Križišće, Jadranovo and Selce will intensify after the end of the summer tourist season.
