June the 30th, 2025 – Train travel in not only Croatia but the more immediate region is becoming more frequent. The first tourist train from Sarajevo in to Croatia is now running.
Sarajevo in neighbouring Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of the most fascinating cities in Europe, if not the entire world. Known worldwide, it is never short of visitors from across the globe. As trains connecting Croatia with multiple countries begin being more frequent, the first tourist train from Sarajevo to Croatia being up and running is an understandable lure for many people heading in either direction.
As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, the first tourist train departed from Sarajevo to Ploče in southern Dalmatia this past weekend. The move marked the resumption of passenger traffic on this otherwise very important line that connects the central part of Bosnia and Herzegovina with the Adriatic coast during the main summer season.
Rather unsurprisingly, the train was absolutely packed with passengers as it began its first departure of the summer season. That was quickly reported by the Railways of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which has re-established this railway line after a very long period (of many years) in which no tourist train from Sarajevo was running to Croatia. This train will now operate three times a week – on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
The railways decided on this initiative due to the enormous level of interest of passengers travelling to the Croatian Adriatic coast. Until now, only freight trains operated along this route, and there was a huge gap in the market for those wanting to head from Sarajevo to Croatia for a break.
At the same time, initial passenger traffic from Sarajevo used to terminate in Čapljina in Bosnia and Herzegovina, from where passengers had to continue their journey across the Croatian border and down to the coast by other means of transport.
The tourist train from Sarajevo to Croatia will remain in operation with its aforementioned schedule until the end of August. The price of a one-way ticket is a very affordable 12.80 euros, while a return ticket costs 21.10 euros. Travellers using this line with certain privileges, such as students and children, may pay lower prices depending on the category of travel.
