Tonight, Saturday 12th August 2017, the traditional ‘Mala Noćna Regata’ or “Little Night Regata” will be held in Postira on the island Brač, for its eleventh year.

The Little Night Regatta has been organised every summer in Postira on the island Brač for the last 11 years. It is the only regatta which sails at night, thanks to the phenomenon of wind currents called “Gažul”, a natural occurrence from the winds descending from Vidova Gora – the highest peak on Brač island, as well as all of the Croatian islands.

This tradition of sailing at night began at the turn of the 20th Century when ships and sailors began sailing for enjoyment, rather than just for work or out of necessity.

Picture this. Around sixteen, 10-metre sailing boats, sailing in the Postira bay. More a spectacular play, than an ordinary regatta. Sails shining a bright white underneath a night sky, lights from the harbour, dancing on the water; the port and the Adriatic become the setting, while Mozart’s famous String Serenade No.13 is the accompanying soundtrack adding drama and intrigue to an already unique spectacle.

Well, this is the “Little Night Regatta”, this is what was created 11 years ago by Mladen Juričić (musician) and Igor Piacun (sailor), along with the tourist board of Postira, when they not only revived the custom of sailing at night but breathed new life and creativity into this darling event to make it a highlight on the Adriatic Coast.

Even if you know nothing about sailing, this event will have you enchanted. Thousands of people fill the Postira bay year after year, to witness, perhaps, the most popular regatta on the Adriatic.

See the video below for a taste of what you can expect.

The regatta has also grown a reputation as a ‘musical hot-spot’, where local musicians carry on the energy of the regatta through into the little hours of the night.

Simply, get a load of this energy filling the port…

The Regatta starts at 21:00, but you will want to get there early to get a good spot for the show. And, if you are setting your course for Brač, you may want to think about mooring up for a couple of nights, as it seems Brač is the place to be.
