An Island Airport Success Story as Brac Prepares to Extend Again

Total Croatia News

Expansion continues at the airport on the island of Brac, reports ExYuAviation on September 18, 2018.

While passenger traffic records continue to be broken in Croatia’s larger airports such as Split and Dubrovnik, spare a thought for one of its smaller commercial airport, which is undergoing a small revolution of its own.

Almost closed just a few years ago, the airport on the island of Brac is not only enjoying a new lease of life, but also looking to the future with a second phase of expansion announced,

The airport’s runway was extended by 320m recently to accommodate jet aircraft, and no less than seven countries were connected directly with flights to the island this summer. Apart from the added convenience or much quicker travel times, the success of the initiative was reflected in the passenger numbers, up more than 34% on the previous year for the period January to August, with the 22,199 passengers so far in 2018 already surpassing the entire year for 2017.

And things are not stopping there. As ExYuAviation reports, the runway is not set to be expanded further, from 1,760m currently, to 2,400m, as well as being widened from 30m to 45m. The terminal building will also be overhauled, and once all construction is finished by 2021, the airport will be capable of handling three large aircraft simultaneously.
