After the last week’s instalment that featured a bench in Međimurje, we’re heading back to the coast for another look at The Bench – this time, a classic example found in Korčula town on the island of the same name.
Let’s start by taking a look at the location of this prime specimen. Looks like a nice spot in the Old town, but judging by how deserted it is, it’s safe to say the midday sun makes it uncomfortable to hang around this particular spot.
Come sundown – or at least when it’s late enough in the afternoon that the bench finally gets some long-expected shade, you’ll find an entirely different situation going on. Every coveted spot on the bench gets taken pretty quickly; see for yourself:
No less then eight local gentlemen gathering for a round of discussion. A very welcoming bench, one that can house a whole group of people, allowing for some quality debate.
Here’s another interesting piece of information: this particular bench is located at the entrance to the famous passage in Korčula town, called the Tri Sulara street (the street of three balconies). The passage is featured in the chorus of a famous traditional Dalmatian song that talks about a couple who’s about to kiss on the third, biggest balcony… Here’s one a capella version by Klapa Kumpanji:
Thanks to Iva Tatić for the photos!
If you happen to come across a nice example of The Bench, snap a pic and send it to our Facebook page or to [email protected].
