Last year, the Institute for Tourism in Zagreb published results of a survey on the tourist season 2014 in Croatia. Part of the analysis was the elevation of the average per capita spending of tourists along the Croatian coast by nation and type of accommodation (hotel, holiday home, apartments, camps). Below we bring some of the data, draw conclusions, and comment lucidly on the figures. For comparison, we have even googled three minutes for some Spanish figures, so that the conclusions do not appear to be pulled out of thin air.
The average tourist has spent some €66.30 a day during his/her stay in Croatia of which €36.20 was spent on accommodation. These numbers represent an increase of average expenditures of 14% in relation to the year 2010. According to statistics, the British spend the most, with daily expenses of €122, followed by the Russians (€99), the French (€95), Austrians (€72), Italians (€66), the Dutch (€65), Hungarians (€63) and the Germans and tourists from Poland (both €62). The average expenditures per person are close to those of the Germans and Austrians, as tourists from these countries account for about 40% of all tourists in Croatia.
In Spain, the expenditure per day for tourists from the mentioned nations is around 100 € per person. The difference between expenditures in Croatia and Spain can be explained by the fact that the majority of tourists in Croatia stay in apartments, holiday houses and camps, while in Spain they mostly stay at hotels and resorts. In addition, the leisure and entertainment offer in Spain is, generally seen, better than in Croatia. However, the spending on shopping, sports, entertainment, excursions and culture rose in Croatia from 2010 to 2014 by 20%, which means that the entertainment offer in Croatia is steadily improving.
By type of accommodation, tourists spend the following amounts in Croatia: hotel guests €106, guests in holiday apartments and houses spend an average €57, guests in camps spend €48 per day, according to data published by the Institute. The tourists surveyed mostly said to be satisfied with the price-performance ratio in Croatia.
