August 3, 2023 – There are hundreds of islands in Croatia, each more interesting than the other, always offering something new. From all kinds of shapes and terrains, to bare little islands, to the one we’re about to discover – the Croatian deer islet, Badija.

The islet of Badija, as Journal writes, is one of the most beautiful pearls of the Adriatic coast. Not only does it hide beautiful nature and cultural heritage, but is home to special inhabitants – European fallow deer. Their presence makes Badija even more special and an unforgettable experience for all visitors looking for rest and relaxation in a fairy-tale setting.

Croatian Deer Island

With its beautiful nature, cultural heritage, and peaceful atmosphere, Badija attracts many visitors looking for a relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. This is not surprising as the islet is known for its spectacular nature and rich Mediterranean vegetation. It is surrounded by crystal clear sea which attracts visitors from all over the world.

As Putnikofer notes, Badija is the largest of the 19 islands, islets, and rocks in the vicinity of Korčula and is formally the largest islet in Croatia. With its area of 0.97 square kilometers, it only lacks 0.03 square kilometers to reach the status of an island.

One of its most exciting attractions is the deer that roam freely in its forests and meadows, who will meet you as soon as you step off the boat and onto the islet! Red deer have lived on Badija since 1958 when two pairs were brought from Brijuni. There is no official info on exactly how many there are now, but it’s at least ten of different ages.

Their presence contributes to the feeling of authenticity and harmony with nature, making a visit to the islet that much more special. The deer have established a unique symbiosis with nature, and visitors often have the opportunity to observe them in their natural environment, feed and pet them. They are really tame and curious.
