A reminder of the potential devastation caused by forest fires in Croatia – a great video of the brave Canadair in action on Korcula in 2015, uploaded to YouTube on February 4, 2017.
The threat of forest fires is a real one in Croatia, and there have been several major fires in recent years – many caused by human carelessness – which have wiped out large tracts of the country’s stunning forests.
In the heat of the summer, and especially on islands, getting fire fighting assistance to the blaze in question is an issue, and one of the front line means of tackling fires are the heroic pilots who flying Croatia’s Canadairs – the same pilots who recently returned from Israel after lending their expertise to the crisis there.
The last major fire on the Dalmatian coast was on the Peljesac Peninsula and on Korcula in 2015, fires which were heroically tackled and eventually brought under control and put out. A video of the efforts of the Canadair during that time has just been uploaded to YouTube, shot in and around Zalavatca, and with quite a nice postscript a year later, as a model Canadair appears in the bay, before retracing the steps of the real Canadairs by remote control.
