Funny or Disrespectful? The Weird Trend Facing Dubrovnik

Lauren Simmonds

Dubrovnik sees people of all kinds drawn to its shores as the summer rolls around. Usually these people are clothed, to some extent anyway.

There is a growing trend that has apparently been around for a while now, and it involves ”getting naked in beautiful places”. Bizarre? Yes. Funny? That’s subjective. Disrespectful? Also subjective.

A photo under the name of ”Liberte de la fesse” (look that up) surfaced recently which shows six individuals on the rocks of the side of Mt Srdj/the old road to Bosanka completely naked giving what looks like some sort of odd salute over the City of Dubrovnik. The trend has grown and since then more photos have appeared, one of which was taken on the island of Lokrum which lies a mere 600m from Dubrovnik’s shoreline, the island is otherwise fairly well known for being accommodating to nudist swimmers and sunbathers.

As mentioned, whether or not this act of well… I have no idea what the point of it is, if I am completely honest – is funny or disrespectful is in the eye of the beholder. Some find it endearing and have taken to the idea themselves, but given that the Serbs brutally attacked Dubrovnik not so long ago from roughly the same location at which some of these people were photographed standing; it has left some residents of Dubrovnik with a bitter taste in their mouths and provoked the seemingly everlasting question of ”what is becoming of this town?”.

What are your opinions? Funny? Disrespectful? Pointless or artistic? Does it send some kind of message or is it utterly without sense? Would you bare all and risk a fine just for the sake of a photo?
