June 2, 2025 – One of the most prestigious awards in the travel industry and once again Hvar nominated – your chance to add your voice. Voting ends June 30.
Soon after I bought my house in Jelsa on Hvar way back in 2002, I went to explore this delightful island that I knew nothing about after my very spontaneous purchase. One of the first things I saw on the Jelsa waterfront was a very useful map of the whole island, on which was written ‘Hvar is officially one of the 10 most beautiful islands in the world.’
Fantastic, I thought to myself, it seems I had made a very good, if random choice for my new place to live. I really had no idea just how magnificent my adopted home was, or how much joy it would bring me for the 13 years I lived there.
It was only some time later that I learned the origin of this claim of being among the 10 most beautiful islands in the world – the prestigious Conde Nast Readers Awards back in something like 1998, from memory.

Conde Nast and Hvar have been synonymous ever since, a respected travel brand and an elite destination. And despite the fact that many people now search for their travel recommendations in different ways, the brand of Conde Nast remains strong, especially among the all-important American market, a market which is falling in love with Hvar in ever greater numbers – indeed, last year, the biggest number of visitors to Hvar Town were American.
Hvar has been voted the Best Island in Europe a couple of times by Conde Nast Readers, a great PR boost for an island courting the American market. And if you are a Hvar lover, here is your chance to vote for Croatia’s premier island in 2025.
In the words of the Hvar Tourist Board:

Indeed, Hvar has been recently been featured in Conde Nast:
Some destinations make headlines. Hvar has spent years avoiding them, on purpose.
Tucked along Croatia’s Dalmatian coast, Hvar has quietly become the summer sanctuary of choice for those who don’t need to be seen to belong. Celebrities, old families, designers, editors; the names aren’t posted, but their presence is felt.
They come not for attention, but for absence. Not for the scene, but for the privacy behind the pine trees. Not to broadcast a holiday, but to actually have one.
In a world full of destinations trying to impress you, Hvar is that rare destination that reminds you what it feels like to simply be impressed.
What Quiet Luxury Really Looks Like
Hvar Town spills out from a deep, protected harbor that catches morning light as if it were made for it. The vast stone piazza, lined with cafés and overlooked by St. Stephen’s Cathedral, leads into narrow lanes of limestone and bougainvillea.
Yachts anchor offshore, but you won’t find a red carpet. A-listers come and go unnoticed. Locals let them be. And in a world obsessed with spectacle, that’s worth more than exclusivity, it’s freedom. Read the full article here.
