Master of EU Funds: 500 Million HRK for Šibenik, 500 More Pending Approval

Total Croatia News

The City of Šibenik is the uncrowned champion of planned development and the best example of how to make the most out of EU funding.

Owing to its successful development projects in recent years, Šibenik was chosen to host the Days of Regional Development and EU Funds. Along with the whole of Šibenik-Knin County, the city has carried out projects worth a total of 468 million kuna so far, reported ŠibenikIn on October 6, 2017.

The Ministry of Regional Development and EU Funds commissioned a short promotional film about the projects completed in Šibenik, aiming to present the city as an example of successful use of EU funding. The film highlights the most distinguished projects, such as the revitalisation of Šibenik’s fortresses: Barone, St Michael and St John, the last one being the most valuable approved proposal worth 41.5 million kuna.

At this moment, Šibenik has nine new projects pending approval, altogether worth 44 million kuna; they are preparing eight more that will call for a total investment of 500 million kuna, marking a milestone of 1 billion kuna in EU funds provided to the city. Apart from the renovation of forts, projects that have already been approved include the college campus Palacin worth 79.6 million kuna and Centre Trokut worth 20 million kuna.

“Everything good that’s happened in Šibenik, happened because of European money. The biggest credit goes to the crew from the Department of Economy [of the City of Šibenik] that’s preparing the projects and whom I absolutely trust. When you become a brand in tourism owing to your fortresses, it gets easier to negotiate about the infrastructure, sports and everything else”, said Šibenik Mayor Željko Burić in the promotional film.
