Bol’s famous Zlatni Rat beach is Croatia’s most famous, and know to change shape with the tides and winds, but the last few days have been truly incredible. A game of the local watersport ‘picigin’ in a lake in the middle of the beach on January 13, 2016.

Sometimes the weather can produce some quite extraordinary scenes, and this has certainly been the case in recent days with Zlatni Rat beach on the island of Brac. Here is how it looks in the tourist brochures:

Apart from its stunning look, part of what defines the beach is its constant shifting – a little bit this way, a little bit that, but when last Saturday strong winds arrived, the entire Croatian media and many tourist boards posted a picture of Zlatni Rat as you had not seen it before.

That photo went round the word, but the team from Boljani.info went one better today with a game of a very local watersport called ‘picigin’, which was played in a small lake in the middle of the confused beach.

Picigin – pronounced pi-tsi-geen- is a game played mostly in Split, but with its own world championship each year. A game which is played mostly at Split’s Bacvice Beach and consists of grown men standing is shallow water and diving to keep a small ball in the air and out of the water. In what is believed to be the first ever game of picigin inside the Zlatni Rat beach, a one-man game took place in the small lake.
