Špancirfest 2018 in Varaždin: 20th Anniversary In The Works

Total Croatia News

July 19, 2018 — Croatia’s cherished street festival, Špancirfest in Varaždin, offers another creative bonanza of music, art and gastro events this August.

And no, it’s not in Dalmatia.

While everyone is flocking to the sea-kissed parts of Croatia, smart travelers consider Varaždin a must every August. What could possibly top the Dalmatian coast?

Špancirfest! A street festival as creative, big-hearted and eclectic as the town which hosts it.

The city in northern Croatia will be hopping again this year, from August 17 — 26 this year, as all of Varaždin transforms into a massive haven for the creatively inclined, sans the irritating self-indulgement that comes with mingling among artists. The late-summer gathering is the first and arguably most popular street festival of its kind in Croatia.

The 20th-anniversary incarnation of the ten-day street festival will offer a creative outlet for all visitors — any age, background or disposition — creating an inclusive cultural community. It transforms the city’s streets into theaters, stages, clubs, and classrooms. Musicians to artists to street performers, all are welcome.

The program usually runs the gamut from orchestral music to performance art, and all points between. This year’s concerts will be held across four stages, and will include legendary Croatian songstress Josipa Lisac, local rock mainstay Urban & 4, as well as Birmingham reggae group UB 40.
