More progress for Dalmatia as a cycling destination.

The mayor of Split Ivo Baldasar and his deputy Goran Kovačević, accompanied by Denis Špadina, president of the Cycling Union of Split-Dalmatia County, visited on Thursday the route of the first bike path in Split which is soon to be completed, reports Slobodna Dalmacija on August 28, 2015.

Activities to construct the 8.4 kilometres long path will be completed next Friday. The total length of the bicycle path is 11.6 kilometers. The bike path connects the eastern entrance to the city and the West Waterfront. The route is: Domovinskog Rata Street – Put Supavla – Hrvatske Mornarice Street – Sedam Kaštela Street – Matoševa Street – Marjan – Ivana Meštrovića Promenade, where it connects to the already completed bicycle path at the West Waterfront.

The investment in the bike path is worth approximately 230,000.00 kuna. “Citizens of Ravne Njive, Pujanke, Kman and Kocunar will now be able to directly bike to the West Waterfront”, said deputy mayor Goran Kovačević, adding that bikes are the fastest mode of transportation in the cities for routes shorter than 5 kilometers.

Denis Špadina from the Cycling Union was very satisfied. “Cycling Union and the Split cyclists will forever remember this day because this is the beginning of something great for all cyclists. The bike path was made in the best possible way given the situation in Split. All the people who were involved in the project gave their best. We have a promise from the city administration that this is only the beginning of the construction of bicycle paths in the city of Split.”

Mayor Baldasar noted that the city authorities are currently working on the projects for additional bicycle routes. “Our goal is to connect with bike paths all the city districts with recreational zones in Marjan and Žnjan”, said the mayor.

Also, the City of Split and the Municipality of Klis are together planning the construction of bicycle path called “Games of Thrones”. The path would lead from Klis through Stobreč to Duilovo, and should be merged with the route currently under construction.
