Split to Zagreb in One Hour? Croatia Wants Chinese Investment in Railways

If Croatia had China’s railway innovation, and Chinese investment, travelers could get from Split to Zagreb in just over an hour.

Did you know that train speeds in China get up to 340 kilometers per hour?

Ten years ago, China linked the port cities of Ningbo and Shanghai with a 36-kilometer-long bridge – an investment worth 13 billion which has already been paid. The same company, the China Road and Bridge Corporation, is connecting the Croatian south with European money, reports Vijesti.hr on November 3, 2018.

“After we’ve seen what this company has built so far, I do not think we need to be worried, but simply be satisfied that they got this job,“ said Gabrijela Žalac (HDZ) Minister of European Funds.

From bridges and roads to reconstructing the railway line on the Belgrade-Niš route, which the same company will do in agreement with Serbia this year, Žalac is certain that we can modernize our railroads with European money.

“We can, even in this financial perspective and the next one – and it is up to us to create something with the Croatian Ministry of Transport, with the Croatian Railways, regarding virtually how these connections would look, especially in the European Union after 2030,” said the minister.

Train speeds in China get up to 340 kph, meaning travelers could get from Split to Zagreb in just over an hour

Train speeds in China get up to 340 kilometers per hour. This would mean, in Croatian terms, that travelers could get from Split to Zagreb in just over an hour. The government, therefore, argues that the plan is to attract Chinese investments in railway infrastructure – but a train that travels at this lightning speed is a missed dream for Croatia.

The reality of such a project in the near future does not exist, as Croatia would need large freight traffic as a justification for the investment, and the number of inhabitants would be taken into consideration.

The first international Chinese import fair will be held in Shanghai on Monday as a way for the Chinese to show that, along with production and export, they are ready to import. The fair will be held in six pavilions and will span across an incredible 180,000 square meters. Approximately 2,000 companies from 136 countries will participate. The Croatian economic delegation will be present with 27 companies, and Končar will be the only Croatian exhibitor. Along with Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, the arrival of 20 world leaders is expected. The fair will be opened by the Chinese Premier, along with Russian Prime Minister Medvedev.
