The Mediterranean as It Once Was: Zadar in 1950 (VIDEO)

The Dalmatian coast is full of spectacular beauty and one of the main attractions of Croatian tourism, but it was even more stunning before tourism discovered Croatia. A rare video of Zadar in the 1950s.

Croatia may be in a demographic crisis in 2018, but its cities have grown considerably in size over the last century. The capital Zagreb, for example, today boasts a population of about 1 million, about 25% of the entire population lett in Croatia, but back in 1920, there were just 153,000 inhabitants.

So too with many of the towns and cities on the coast. Prior to socialism, the historic walled towns had little around them. First came socialism, with several factories built in prime coastal locations, and then the advent of mass tourism brought the surge in private apartments. The result is that the approach to Croatia’s historic coastal towns can be less than appealing, although the stone town centres themselves maintain their appeal.

Zadar, a former capital of Dalmatia, is one such example. A rising star of Croatian tourism since the arrival of Ryanair back in 2007, Zadar Old Town is as pretty as any on the coast. Even more so, perhaps, some 70 years ago in 1950.
