The Mrduja Tug – Brač and Šolta Islanders Duel it Out

Total Croatia News

Mrduja is a small islet between the islands of Brač and Šolta. The Mrduja Tug is a summer manifestation in which the residents of both islands seek to “pull” the islet closer to them, as the legend says, and this Saturday they will be at it again

Although Šolta and Brač are less than a kilometre apart, there are no regular ferries between the two islands, so this event seeks to connect the residents of Stomorska on Šolta and Milna on Brač, but also their visitors, to present the cultural and touristic wealth of the areas. The Mrduja Tug lasts two day, with the first day dedicated to festivities and a race of small boats, while the afternoon of the second day sees the gathering of Brač and Šolta vessels in the Mrduja waters, the tying of a rope around the islet and a tug of war.

The winner will, bolstered by the cheering of fans and lighting of torches, secures “ownership” over the islet until next year. After the sea spectacle, all participants will withdraw to their ports to prepare for the feast and winner announcements. The closing festivity is held on the opposite island each year.

Event organisers are the Tourism Boards of Milna and Šolta, sponsored by districts of Šolta and Milna, Split-Dalmatia County, Tourism Board of Split-Dalmatia County and Ožujsko beer.
