UK Post Office Lists Croatian Destination Among Cheapest in Europe

Porec is number 6 on the UK Post Office Travel Money’s list of cheap European destinations.

When you think of cheap holiday destinations in Europe, you probably think of Spain. Northern Europeans from countries from which the sun tends to hide, such as the United Kingdom, Germany and Scandinavian countries flock to Spain’s southern coast and Balearic islands each year to top up their waning vitamin D count and take a break from the fast paced, work oriented life of Northern Europe.

Perhaps you think of Greece? Portugal or Bulgaria’s famous Sunny Beach? You’ll find all of them on the UK Post Office Travel Money’s list, and you’ll also come across a rather surprising Croatian gem.

Istria has grown in popularity in recent years, in many ways outshining Dalmatia with its semi-continental feel, charming hilltop towns, vast vineyards and picturesque countryside not dissimilar to elite parts of Italy. Porec is a rising star when it comes to tourism, attracting more and more visitors from around the world each year with everything from music festivals to wine tasting. The postcard Istrian town has caught the eye of the UK Post Office in it’s 2017 list of cheap European destinations.

”Find the destinations where the holiday purse will stretch furthest” states the UK Post Office Travel Money’s site, before going on to state that its worldwide survey of prices for tourist staples in popular resorts and cities has found that the holiday purse is likely to stretch furthest in European hotspots. Makes sense, given the United Kingdom’s convenient geographical location on the European continent – it is rarely more than three hours away from a sun drenched beach by air.

”The Post Office barometer monitors the price of eight tourist items – comprising dinner for two with wine, a range of drinks, suncream and insect repellent” states the site.

Not for the first time, Algarve in Portugal takes top place, followed by Sunny Beach in Bulgaria, the famous (or infamous?!) Costa del Sol in Spain and Marmaris in Turkey.

Between Corfu in Greece and Sorrento in Italy sits Istria’s very own Porec, with a list of average costs for a bottle of water, a coffee, a non-alcoholic drink, a beer, a bottle of wine, a glass of wine, insect spray and sun protection detailed alongside. Tallying up a more than fair total of almost £69 for the lot, Porec sits comfortably at number six on the list.
