May the 21st, 2024 – A mysterious underwater road in Croatia has been discovered. Archaeologists believe that it would have been used approximately 7,000 years ago.

Every few months, a rather remarkable archaeological discovery is happened upon somewhere in Croatia. The land we now know as the Republic of Croatia has been the battleground of many wars and conflicts, changes of regime and state, and influxes and exoduses of people throughout the millennia.

This latest discovery has delighted archaeologists and other such enthusiasts, with the underwater road currently being dated to around 4,900 BC.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, archaeologists were stunned when divers discovered an underwater road in Croatia, buried under thick layers of marine mud. This amazing ancient structure was first spotted by archaeologist Igor Borzić from the University of Zadar, who happened to notice some “strange formations” at a depth of almost five metres below the surface close to Gradina Bay (Uvala Gradina) on the island of Korčula in southern Dalmatia.

This now entirely submerged road used to connect the island of Korčula with an artificial, prehistoric settlement that belonged to a maritime culture. The aforementioned university released a video of the discovery, showcasing a passage about four metres wide, built of stacked up rocks and stones, as reported by Indy100.

Archaeologists believe that people walked along this underwater road in Croatia almost 7,000 years ago, and radiocarbon dating of the wood near the site suggests that the settlement may have been built around 4,900 BC.

The researchers are understandably absolutely thrilled with this latest discovery and, as they continue to explore Croatia’s rich and seemingly endless past, look forward to yet more new discoveries.
