40-Year Record Low Unemployment in Croatia

June 12, 2023 – At the end of May, 97,758 unemployed persons were registered at the Croatian Employment Service (CES). That is 7,592 people or 7.2 percent less than in May 2022. This is a 40-year record low unemployment in Croatia, according to CES data published on Friday.

As Poslovni writes, the last time unemployment in Croatia recorded below 100,000 people was back in 1982.

Compared to April, the number of unemployed people in May this year was 12,080 or 11 percent lower, which is the fourth month in a row that unemployment in Croatia has decreased on a monthly basis. This is mainly a result of the start of seasonal employment in tourism.

According to the daily data of the CES, 95,411 unemployed people are currently registered at the Institute. On the other hand, there are 22,120 vacancies.

According to CES data, a total of 9,986 people were newly registered in the unemployment register during May. That makes 2.3 percent more than in May 2022.

The Breakdown

At the same time, 70.8 percent of newly registered people, 7,069 of them, came to the Institute directly from employment. During the month, the largest number of people from employment came from the processing industry, 1,047 people (14.8 percent). Moreover, 862 people (12.1 percent) came from wholesale and retail. 752 (10.7 percent) came from other service industries. Finally,750 people (10.6 percent) came from the hospitality industry, providing accommodation, preparing and serving food.

Last month, 2,768 persons (27.7 percent) were registered as unemployed, while 149 persons (1.5 percent) were in regular education.

According to CES data, 17,578 people left the unemployment register in May, which is 6.7 percent less than in May last year. Of these, 13,817 were employed. 12,949 or 93.7 percent are based on employment and 868 persons or 6.3 percent based on other business activities.

Recorded employment on the basis of employment in most cases took place in providing accommodation, preparing and serving food – 3,615 people or 27.9 percent.

Wholesale and retail trade followed with 1,867 people (14.4 percent). Processing industry came next with 1,351 people (10.4 percent). Administrative and other service activities employed 914 people (7.1 percent) based on the establishment of an employment relationship in May.

Other Reasons for Record Low Unemployment in croatia

In May, 3,761 people were removed from the unemployment register due to other reasons in accordance with the Law, such as leaving the workforce (retirement, inclusion in regular education), non-compliance with legal provisions (not actively looking for work, unavailable for work), deregistration from the register, etc.

By county, it was 2,837 persons or 21.9 percent from Split-Dalmatia County, 1,195 persons or 9.2 percent from Osijek-Baranja County, 1,140 persons or 8.8 percent from the City of Zagreb, and 745 persons or 5.8 percent Vukovar-Srijem county.

The largest absolute number of registered unemployed people was recorded in Split-Dalmatia County (16,570 or 17 percent of the total number), Osijek-Baranja County (12,813 or 13.1 percent) and the City of Zagreb (11,806 or 12.1 percent). The smallest, on the other hand, was recorded in Lika-Senj County (1,076 or 1.1 percent).

In May, 17,730 people or 18.1 percent of the total number of unemployed people used the benefit of cash compensation. The number of beneficiaries of financial benefits decreased by 14.5 percent or 3,014 people compared to the same month last year.
