Wildfire Updates: Biokovo Fire Too Big to Stop Without Rain, Šibenik-Knin County Fires Localised

Total Croatia News

The County’s Fire Commander Dražen Glavina said that the fire is difficult to contain because it is located on harsh terrain.

Despite the superhuman efforts by firefighters, the fire on Biokovo that started several days ago has not yet been contained, 24 sata reports on August 26, 2017. The area is located on harsh terrain, 1,400 m above sea level, at Studenci, Lokva and Veliki Šibenik Peak.

On Saturday morning, smoke covered the northern side of the mountain as well because the fire started spreading to the highest points of the mountain. In addition to firefighters, who have been battling the blaze for days, two Canadairs, an Air-tractor, and members of HGSS (Croatian Mountain Rescue Service), Biokovo Nature Park, and Hrvatske šume are helping put out the fire.

Only when the fire is contained will experts be able to assess the level of damage, the only thing that we know for sure at the moment is that a huge area of the Nature Park has been affected, including the flora, fauna, and pine and beech forests, some of which are one hundred years old.

No new fires in Šibenik
One hundred firefighters are still in Drniš, supervising Promina Mountain, after the huge fire that started nine days ago was localised around 8 p.m. last night, Darko Dukić, Šibenik-Knin County Fire Commander says.
“We will be supervising the area for at least three more days because of its size. There was a fire here 15 years ago and 300 people fought the blaze for a month, so we have to be careful and prepared,” Fire Commander Dukić says.

52 firefighters from Brod-Posavina, Virovitica-Podravina and Bjelovar-Bilogora Counties left the fire front last night and Fire Commander Dukić thanked them for their service.
Some firefighters from Zagreb and Karlovac are still at the front, Mr Dukić said.
There have been no new fires in Šibenik-Knin County, but some areas are still being monitored. Still, Saturday brings a much-needed day of rest for the tired and brave firefighters of Šibenik-Knin County who have been battling several fires for weeks.
