April the 6th, 2024 – Expensive Zagreb works worth a massive 85 million euros have now commenced, holding promise for further traffic chaos here in the capital.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, Zagreb Mayor Tomislav Tomašević announced that next week, the construction of the new City Library and Paromlin socio-cultural centre will begin. Totalling a massive 85 million euros, it’s the largest single capital investment made in the mandate of the city government.

The complex on the axis of the so-called “new city centre”, spanning an area of 36,000 square metres, should be opened in June 2026. The designers are UPI-2M, and the main contractor for these extensive Zagreb works is Kamgrad. “We hope to withdraw a little less than half of the funds from EU funds, and the largest part will be financed from the city budget itself,” Tomašević revealed.

The whole area should get a new look, work is starting soon on the Gredelje area. Things are getting underway, and this is a private investment. Things are also getting started in the former Zagrebačka banka area, and a solution is also being negotiated for the nearby dilapidated buildings.

The car park next to Paromlin with about 450 parking spaces will be closed until the end of these Zagreb works, and the city will provide free parking near the Zagreb Fair (Velesajam), from where there are also very frequent bus lines to the Central Station.

By the end of the year, a new car park with about 380 spaces has been planned in Gredelje, and ultimately parking in that area will be solved by an underground garage with about 330 spaces in the area of the new complex.

Deputy Mayor Luka Korlaet said that the complex will consist of a reconstructed part of the former Paromlin and a glass annex, and will also have an underground garage on two floors with 350 spaces. It will all be managed by Zagreb Parking.

He explained that it will not only be a place for the new City Library, but also a socio-cultural educational centre, for events such as concerts, exhibitions, seminars, conferences, lectures and plays. There will also be a cafe on top of the building, and within the complex itself, there will be a congress hall with about 450 seats.
