The Croatian coast is dotted with spectacular coastal walled towns which are great tourism magnets. From perhaps the two best known (and most beautiful) – Dubrovnik in the south, Rovinj in the north – these walled towns add to the beauty and majestic of an already spectactular coastline.
Among the prettiest is Primosten, a small town north of Split, whose old town was once an islet, connected by drawbridge, until a causeway was built in the 16th century. It takes its name from the Croatian word primostiti, which means to span.
