And so the peak season slowly draws to a close in Dalmatia, but there is little chance to rest, as attention over the next few weeks will turn to the fields, with first the grape harvest in Dalmatia, followed by the olive harvest in October and November.
Some people are already picking, however, especially producers of Posip, an early ripening grape whose home is Korcula, but one which is increasingly prevalent on some other islands, most notably Hvar.
And it was on Hvar at the end of last week that a lovely English lady could have been spotted near Milna picking the first grapes of the new vintage.
The island of Hvar must be like a sweet shop for a wine expert looking to make wine on the island. With so many different terroirs to accompany a rich choice of indigenous grapes, several of which only grow on the island, there is large scope to make some truly unique wines. Jo Ahearne MW has taken the plunge, moving to Hvar two years ago, and she is the latest member of the Hvar Wine Association, with whom she has been presenting her Ahearne Rosina, which is made from Hvar grape variety, Darnekusa.
It is not the only local grape variety which is interesting Jo, and although my wine knowledge is obviously much more limted than hers, it is always fun (and an education) to chat with her about her plans and observations about Hvar wine.
One of the new additions to her plans for the 2016 vintage is to make her first Posip, and the picture above shows the first batch as they arrived at her facility in Sveta Nedjelja a couple of days ago.
