Kod Zajca is a long-awaited wine bar in Rijeka, the third largest Croatian city located on the Kvarner bay, each year more relevant tourist hub and a very lively culture centre in Croatia. And right across from one of the main cultural institutions, Croatian National Theatre “Ivana pl. Zajca” a wine bar was opened, called “Kod Zajca” (meaning “next to Zajc”, referring to the theatre).
It is a wine bar with wonderful interior design, almost archetypical for a wine bar, but very cosy and a lovely little terrace for outside seating when the weather permits that (however, since Rijeka is quite a rainy city, if you ever get a chance to sit on the terrace, make sure to take advantage of it!) The wine list in the bar is supposedly over a hundred wines long, and at any point at least over 20 wines are offered by the glass, mostly Croatian but also some well known imported wines. They also offer quite a respectable selection of sparkling wines, local, imported and even some from the Champagne region.
The full name of the establishment is “Kod Zajca Wine and Coffee Bar”, so you know what we’re going to talk about next: beer. In addition to many wines, the bar offers quite a selection of beer, both great beers made by the newcomers known as the “Croatian craft beer scene”, such as Zmajsko brewery, but also imported favourites such as Fuller’s ESB or Chimay Blue. Both wine and beer prices are reasonable and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable, so feel free to ask for help.
Of, yes, coffee, sorry ‘bout that: supposedly Kod Zajca serves the best coffee in Rijeka, it’s Illy and the staff is well educated on how to make a perfect espresso every single time. The main objection to the bar is the fact that it offers no food whatsoever, not even some cheese, peanuts or chips. They do, however, organize a lot of various wine events, winery presentations, beer presentations etc., and also participate in events held at the theatre, such as fashion shows that you can enjoy from the bar.
