The Voštinić Klasnić winery is located in Moslavina region east of Zagreb, precisely Ivanić Grad. Their biggest pride is Škrlet, already in the superior category, while last year they produced their first predicate wine from the variety, also superior.
Škrlet is an indigenous culture of Moslavina and Pokuplje, also found in Vukomeričke Gorice and in Prigorje. It is said the name stems from the German word scharlach, as when fully ripe the grapes get purple-red spots.
Škrlet Unikat attracted me from the start with its modern label with a red circle on yellow, only to do so as well with its looks, scent and taste.
The wine is crystal clear and of a gentle yellow colour. Pleasantly surprising with a scent of freshness. The first association was peach, followed by notes of melon and pear. Besides the dominant fruit notes, there are also hints of herbal ones. When I spun the wine in the glass and let it ope up, some citrus notes appeared too.
The taste is harmonious, with well-balanced acids, and considering the variety, there is a pronounced fullness. There is also savour in the mouth which gives a sweet ending and additionally harmonizes the wine.
The taste and scent linger; I would say this wine is a good combination of drinkability and complexity.
Diverseness and complexity in the taste and scent, which this wine has, is not characteristically for Škrlet so this specimen truly justifies the title Unikat.
Škrlet Unikat has a potential of lasting in the bottle so we will enjoy it for a longer time.
Recommended to be served chilled to 10°C and combined with seafood, cold appetizers, pasta and risotto with vegetables, classic sushi and light main meals.
