June 7, 2023 – The city stadium on Kranjčevićeva Street in Zagreb will see a reconstruction, probably next year, Mayor Tomislav Tomašević said at a press conference on Wednesday. A look at the plans for Stadion Zagreb.

The price will be slightly below 20 million euros. The capacity of the stadium will be increased so that European matches can be played there. The stadium could be renovated by the spring of 2025, reports Index.hr.

The Zagreb mayor believes that this stadium will be one of the most modern in Europe. The self-sustainable stadium will have solar panels that will ensure electricity savings and water tanks that will be able to heat or cool the lawn. The capacity will increase to 12,000 spectators because two stands will be built.

“Next to the stadium, a parking lot and a new town square will be built. There will be large solar panels on the roof, which will power the stadium. It will be energy efficient and therefore should be one of the most modern stadiums in Europe,” Tomašević said. You can see the video presentation here.

He also touched on Maksimir Stadium.

“Maksimir is a subject that has been chewed over. Everyone wants the stadium in Maksimir to remain. We do not intend to further reconstruct the stadium, which is one of the ugliest in Europe. It is better to demolish the existing one and build a new one. Negotiations for the reconstruction of Maksimir are going in the right direction.

We want to make a good conceptual solution of what the financial structure will be. The city is ready to give land by concession but will not invest money from the treasury. By the end of my mandate, the construction of the new Maksimir will be agreed upon, and the reconstruction of Kranjčevićeva is the first step in that,” said the Zagreb mayor.
