November the 20th, 2023 – INA has discovered a large Grubišno Polje gas deposit, and the proper procedure for its extraction is now underway.
As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, INA has announced that it has managed to discover a significant gas deposit near Grubišno Polje and has since initiated the procedure for issuing permits so that its extraction may begin as soon as possible. This is beyond excellent news for a small Croatian town that appears to be very quickly turning into an important gas centre. It’s also good in terms of ensuring gas supply independence for domestic consumers, as reported by HRT.
In a place where several months of investigative work and testing took place, the very serious work is yet to begin. At the Veliki Rastovac 1 well, approximately twenty kilometres from the heart of Grubišno Polje, the works went on throughout the months of May and June. The quantities of gas found here are so great that their commercial exploitation is now very eagerly awaited.

“During the testing process, we achieved a maximum flow of 140,000 cubic metres per day, which roughly represents about 7% of INA’s entire production,” explained Goran Jović, Director of Research at INA d.d. He added that the Grubišno Polje gas deposit is so big that they want to include another well in the production. A prerequisite for further investments is the extraction of the so-called exploitation field.
“We plan to build a connecting gas pipeline and put the field into production in 2027 in accordance with the current plan for obtaining permits for the exploitation of hydrocarbons in Croatia,” Jović pointed out.
In Grubišno Polje, they are overjoyed because from this summer on, their budget is also steadily growing thanks to the discovery of these very significant gas deposits. With two wells already operating within that area, the company Underground gas storage (Podzemno skladište plina) is already supplying up to fifteen percent of the total local production from the system.
A strategic project
“This year, we’ve planned somewhere around 4 million kuna (over 500,000 euros) of our income, with the fact that half of it will be collected by the county, so these are significant funds,” said Zlatko Madjeruh, the mayor of Grubišno Polje.
Next year, the mining rent will reach one million euros, but there will also be more investments to come. A new gas station is about to be opened, and when the wells are exhausted in three to four years, the Grubišno Polje gas deposit will be converted into underground gas storage. The project worth 67 million euros is one of the state’s strategic investments that will increase the security of the local gas supply to Croatian consumers.
