October the 25th, 2024 – Brand new Zagreb tram line expansion is beginning after twenty long years of nothing.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, work is now finally beginning on the expansion and reconstruction of Sarajevska cesta (Sarajevo road) the new southern road entrance into the City of Zagreb. That’s far from all, however, as the very first Zagreb tram line expansion after twenty years is also kicking off.

Yesterday at noon, Zagreb mayor Tomislav Tomašević and his deputies Danijela Dolenec and Luka Korlaet marked the beginning of the works on Sarajevska cesta near the intersection with Vatikanska Ulica (Vatican Street).

The works included the construction of 1.8 kilometres of roadway and 2.25 kilometres of the new Zagreb tram line expansion. The new tram line will connect Avenija Dubrovnik (Dubrovnik Avenue) with the Shunting Station, where the roundabout and a brand new ZET facility will be built.

The new road being built by the City of Zagreb is a continuation of a wider Croatian motorways (Hrvatske ceste) project. That project involves the construction of a new road viaduct over the Zagreb Shunting Station and a connection to the motorway network, which will open a new southern entrance to the Croatian capital city.

The value of the works taking place on Sarajevska cesta stand at a massive 25 million euros, for which the majority of co-financing is expected from EU funds in cooperation with the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Transport and Infrastructure. The completion of the works is scheduled for the end of 2025, according to a report from Index.
