November the 17th, 2024 – Almost three quarters of Croats are planning to alter their way of living as a result of climate change.

As Poslovni Dnevnik/Ana Blaskovic writes, the above information was garnered through the results of the seventh climate survey by the European Investment Bank (EIB). Over 24,000 respondents from across the EU and the USA participated in the survey.

The survey was conducted in Croatia back in August this year, with 1,005 respondents participating. The EIB noted that respondents ranked climate change as the second biggest problem facing their country, right after the cost of living crisis. The key result is that as many as 96 percent of respondents living in Croatia stated that adaptation to climate change is important for the country, and 40 percent believe that it should be considered a top priority.

“The concerning storms, forest fires and droughts that have recently ravaged Croatia have emphasised the urgent need to adapt to climate change. As climate change adversely affects all key sectors, including infrastructure, transport, agriculture and tourism, the EIB’s support for adaptation to climate change plays a crucial role not only in preserving livelihoods, but also in strengthening the foundations of the domestic economy,” EIB Vice President Teresa Czerwińska stated.

As many as 91 percent of Croats believe in climate change, responding that they have experienced at least one extreme weather event over the past five years. 65 percent of Croats were affected by this summer’s dizzying extreme heat, 49 percent of them experienced a violent storm or hail, and 36 percent experienced drought.

In this sense, Croats appear more than aware of the need for adaptation as climate change alters the world. 74 percent of Croats openly stated that they will to change some things in their lives to adapt to climate change. 29 percent of them even think that they will eventually need to move to a less climate-vulnerable location.
