Dino Prižmić proved on Sunday that his victory over Novak Djokovic was no coincidence, booking his place in the Round of 16 at the Italian Open with a commanding 6-1, 7-5 win over France’s Ugo Humbert.
It marks the first Masters 1000 Round of 16 appearance of Prižmić’s career. The 20-year-old from Split will next face the winner of the match between Karen Khachanov and Botic van de Zandschulp for a place in the quarter-finals.
Prižmić set the tone immediately, storming through the opening stages of the match by winning the first five games. Humbert looked stunned by the Croatian’s intensity, quickly surrendering the first set 6-1.
The second set proved more competitive as the 27-year-old Frenchman improved significantly behind his first serve, making it harder for Prižmić to pressure him on return as effectively as he had in the opener. Still, the young Croatian remained composed on serve, maintaining a high level throughout and never allowing Humbert a realistic chance to break or shift the momentum.
The decisive moment arrived in the 11th game. At 15-30, Prižmić struck two outstanding returns to secure the crucial break before stepping up to serve for the match. A few rushed errors briefly allowed Humbert back to deuce, but the Frenchman never earned a break opportunity. On his second match point, Prižmić closed the contest with an ace, the same way he finished his stunning win over Djokovic.
Prižmić fired seven aces, four more than Humbert, landed 72% of his first serves, and lost just six points behind them. Humbert failed to create a single break-point opportunity, while Prižmić converted three of his four chances. The Croatian also kept his unforced errors remarkably low, committing only eight throughout the match, compared to Humbert’s 28.
With the victory, Prižmić became the first Croatian player since Borna Ćorić in 2023 to reach the Round of 16 at a Masters 1000 event, also in Rome, where Ćorić eventually exited in the quarter-finals.
