July the 29th, 2026 – Croatian inspectors have begun stepping up their crackdown on illegal holiday rentals up and down the coastline in particular, with plenty of fines already issued.
As Poslovni reports, Croatia’s State Inspectorate has intensified its inspections of holiday accommodation advertised on platforms such as Booking.com and Airbnb, targeting property owners who rent to tourists without meeting the country’s latest, strict legal requirements. The inspections form part of a broader effort to combat the shadow economy in the tourism sector and ensure fair competition among registered accommodation providers.

According to the State Inspectorate, inspectors have already uncovered numerous cases of illegal short-term rentals during this year’s tourist season. As a result, authorities have confiscated 343,000 euros in income believed to have been earned through unlawful renting, while fines imposed have exceeded 81,000 euros.
The inspections focus on identifying individuals advertising tourist accommodation without the required registration or operating in breach of Croatian tourism regulations. Authorities are checking online listings as well as conducting on-site inspections to verify whether accommodation providers comply with the law.

When inspectors discover illegal activity, they can issue fines, prohibit further renting and confiscate the financial gains obtained through unlawful operations. Officials say these measures are intended to discourage unregistered rentals and protect hosts who operate legally and meet all regulatory obligations. The State Inspectorate said inspections will continue throughout the peak summer tourist season, with online booking platforms remaining one of the primary tools used to identify suspected illegal accommodation.
Officials stress that the goal is not only to punish offenders but also to ensure equal market conditions, protect consumers and improve the overall quality and transparency of Croatia’s tourism sector. As demand for private accommodation continues to grow, authorities say stronger enforcement is necessary to prevent unfair competition and safeguard public revenue.
