July the 29th, 2026 – Croatia has opened its very first biological swimming pool in the continental town of Čazma, representing a significant step forward in terms of sustainable tourism.

Croatia has officially opened its first biological swimming pool, marking a milestone in sustainable tourism and environmentally friendly recreation. Index reports that the new facility is located in the town of Čazma, around 60 kilometres east of Zagreb, the new facility is part of the much wider Čazma Natura project, which has the primary goal of transforming the town into a leading green tourism destination.

Unlike conventional swimming pools, the biological pool uses natural filtration instead of chlorine or other chemicals. Water is purified through biological processes involving aquatic plants and microorganisms, creating a safe swimming environment while preserving the natural ecosystem. It is the first public facility of its kind in Croatia.

The swimming area spans approximately 1,665 square metres and is divided into separate sections for swimmers and non-swimmers. Alongside the pool, visitors will find sunbathing areas, changing rooms, showers, a catering facility, children’s amenities and recreational spaces designed for families and visitors of all ages.

The pool forms part of the Bio Park Čazma complex, which also includes educational facilities, walking trails and nature-focused attractions. The project promotes sustainable tourism while highlighting the area’s biodiversity and encouraging visitors to explore the surrounding landscape.

Officials say the biological pool represents a new direction for Croatian tourism, combining recreation with environmental protection. Similar facilities have become increasingly popular across areas of Europe because they reduce chemical use, consume less energy and blend more naturally into their surroundings. With the opening of the country’s first biological swimming pool, Čazma is hoping to attract visitors looking for a different kind of summer experience, one centred on nature, sustainability and chemical-free swimming.
