November the 3rd, 2026 – The very first snow of the winter has arrived, with around 20 cm falling and settling in the highest Croatian settlement.

In the highest parts of Croatia, the very first snow of the winter season has fallen. Approximately 12 centimetres were measured on Zavižan, and a snow cover also formed on Platak near Rijeka and in mountainous Gorski Kotar. Index reports that the highest amount of snow, currently measuring at around 20 centimetres, has been measured in Begovo Razdolje, the highest inhabited settlement in all of Croatia.

Because of the fresh snowfall, the residents of Begovo Razdolje had to take up their shovels a little later than usual and clear the approaches to their houses and driveways. “I’m 82 years old, so this comes as recreation for me. A bit of physical activity and fresh air does me good,” local resident Franjo Štritof told Nova TV. For the twenty or so permanent residents of the settlement, snow at the beginning of November at 1,078 metres above sea level is no surprise. “Everyone chooses whether this is for them or not, but life here is good,” says farm owner Bojan Francišković.

During the day, the air temperature hovered around three degrees Celsius, meaning that eventually, the snow turned into rain. “Now, it’s raining a little and snowing a little, and at night, pure snow falls,” Franjo Štritof explained. According to current forecasts, the first snow of the season won’t stay until the weekend. “This is nothing new. Usually it turns white like this in the middle of October, lasts for about a day or two, and after that the weather improves again and autumn is still alright for a while,” concluded Bojan Francišković.
