British media calls Croatia the hottest spot on the Med on April 22, 2016, and presents 10 (not so) secret tips for this year’s summer sun.
I have an aversion to lists on the Internet in general, as they tend to be just clickbait and no substance, which is why we started our own 25 Things to Know about Croatia series, but the Daily Mirror’s recent “Top 10 secret Croatia sunshine getaways in the Med’s hottest holiday spot this summer” was of interest as it gives an insight into how Croatia is being presented internationally by the foreign media.
While some of the destinations were hardly secret (Rovinj and the Makarska Riviera are among the top destinations on the coast), the article also features one of the rising stars of Croatian tourism – northern Dalmatia, and specifically Sibenik and Zadar, two cities whose tourism fortunes are on the rise.
Sibenik has won praise for its innovative use of its fortress heritage, and indeed one of them St. Nicholas, has been accepted by UNESCO for nomination as a World Heritage Site. If accepted, it would be the second site for the city, after St. James Cathedral in the centre of the city. Its success with its heritage is matched by its tourism accommodation, and the luxury marina resort recently opened by the Turkish Dogus Group should help transform luxury tourism in the region.
Sibenik’s rise has been mirrored by Zadar, whose tourism fortunes started to improve in 2007 with the arrival of Ryanair, which since established its 54th European base at Zadar Airport. The former Dalmatian capital was voted Best European Destination 2016 on website European Best Destinations, and the city is looking forward to a bumper summer.
The list also includes one of the true gems of Croatian hospitality, the Meneghello Estate on Palmizana on the Pakleni Islands, just opposite Hvar Town, an oasis of calm and tranquillity since 1906.
