Greenpeace Croatia celebrates people power with the announcement that Croatia is abandoning plans to drill for oil and gas in the Adriatic.
The campaign was long, the message was short, as Greenpeace Croatia announced the news on Facebook:
People power wins: ”The majority of the public is against Adriatic oil drilling. Tourism is much more important and this project is simply not acceptable.” — Minister of Economy, Croatia.
More information on the story in Croatian media below, but it would appear that the jewel of Croatian tourism – the pristine Adriatic Sea – is safe for now.
Jubilant environmental campaigners will now turn their efforts to the next battleground inland, in the north-eastern region of Slavonia, where drilling rights were signed between the government and Canadian company Vermilion Energy last week, as previously reported by TCN.
