Stari Grad’s 2400 years of foundation begins with celebrations this evening. First up, the opening of the exhibition by Jagoda Buić beginning at 20.30h in the Juraj Plančić Gallery at the Stari Grad Museum.
Jagoda Buić is one of the most distinctive Croatian visual artists. Buić has left a significant mark in theater with the development for costumes and scenery for 150 plays, operas, ballets, and several films. Her artistic approach to theater consists on the insistence of large spatial accomplishments and avant-garde spirit, with an interest in myths and the classical world.
Buić has exhibited individually at hundreds of exhibitions around the world for drawings, gouaches, collages, installations, sculptures and designs. She is most famous for her work with contemporary tapestry.
Buić has received, among others, the Grand Prix Itamaraty at the 14th Biennale in Sao Paulo, Herder prize in Vienna, and the UNESCO prize for merit in the field of contemporary art.
Buić was born in Split and studied at the Academy of Applied Arts and Design and Art History at the University of Zagreb. She graduated with honors from the Academy in Vienna. She later studied film scenery in Cinecitta in Rome, and studied the history of costumes in Centre delle Arti e del Costume in Palazzo Grassi in Venice.
Buić opens her exhibition tonight in Stari Grad, a town of her ancestors, family, and friends. The exhibit will run through the end of September.
