From January 1 to August 31 this year, there were 85,066 arrivals in the city Rijeka, which is 12% more compared to the same period in 2015, and 189,133 overnight stays, which is 21% more than the same period last year.
There is a great interest for cruise ships in the Kvarner region, which this year announced a record of 14 cruise ships. The first cruise ship arrived in Rijeka early May of this year.
“Tourist success has contributed to Rijeka because of its location and infrastructure to recognize small cruisers and sailboats, with Rijeka being the home port. By the end of the year we expect 14 large cruise ships,” said the Mayor of Rijeka, Vojko Obersnel.
One of the largest cruise ships this season arrived in Opatija just yesterday morning – welcoming in the 922 capacity cruise ship “Crystal Symphony”, owned by Crystal Cruises. To put things into perspective: Opatija is a town of 11,659 inhabitants in total, of which 6,657 live in the urban settlement.
When cruise ship guests come off the ships in Rijeka, they are offered trips by various agencies to locations in the area such as Mošćenica and Opatija, Rijeka, Hum, Vrbnik, Krk, Postojna, and rivers Kamačnik and Kupa.
Dominik Damiš from the Tourist Board of Rijeka has stated they are very appreciative of the partnerships with the cruise ships and agencies that have helped them to bring in 14 cruise ships this year.
